"Between the cracks in nature along the lines of thought and compassion, fueled by an intuitive investigation, resides the aesthetic curiosity of Helene Öfwerström, Swedish multi-disciplinary artist whose oeuvre emerges from a restless eye that best finds expression in photo-based works.

Shadows and fog obscure direct identification of some figures in her portraiture as do the contortions that distort the body as well as expectations toward the reading of the subject of the photographic document. In her direct photographs is a layering of both meaning and physical juxtaposition of object to setting, of the figure in the framed rectangle of the picture often stark yet submerged in intention via the artist's manipulation of the scene.

There is a fluidity in the diverse range of subject matter that reflect her broad concerns that echo  change, age, resolution and play and finally, abandonment:

Aquarius is about the morphing of the body and its elasticity as well as its ability to be regarded as ornamental

Becoming Cindy is a poignant portrait of gender reassignment without joy but of conviction and an implied determination, an inevitability whereas  a triptych of children in two settings (at a puddle on a sidewalk and drawing a hopscotch game) resolve to the same feeling of emptiness after wonder; fatigue and forgetfulness after play; of the evaporation and wasting away of the spirit in time.

The immediacy of Öfwerström´s imagery belie what lies beneath , a deeper emotional reading that must be entered into by the viewer with a generosity of spirit equal to her own"
